So, What Exactly is Coworking?

Harvard Business Review defines coworking as a “membership-based workspace where diverse groups of freelancers, remote workers, and other independent professionals work together in a shared, communal setting,” and we agree! Here at St. Albert Coworking we’re working together to define shared workspaces and the future of work.

You can expect the basics at any coworking space: coffee, wifi, printers, workstations, etc, but to make the most of your shared workspace experience we recommend connecting with the community manager and getting to know your fellow coworkers.

So, what exactly is coworking?

Coworking Is a Space For Productivity

First and foremost, your coworking space is a place to work on projects and get items off your to-do list! A membership at a local coworking space is the BEST way to keep expensive office rent or lease costs off your books. Some coworking spaces allow team memberships, meaning you can hold staff meetings and ditch your regular boardroom.

If you’re a home-based business and working from home is filled with distractions, spending 1 – 2 days a week at a coworking space can help limit those intrusions to your work.

Coworking Is a Space For Community

A sense of community is why members come back to a coworking space. A strong focus on values, collaborative events and member experience all foster community in a shared workspace. A coworking community can include work from home individuals, self-employed people, business owner, entrepreneurs and students.

A coworking space might foster community by:

  • Hosting member appreciation events such as a casual monthly breakfast,
  • Adding their members to an online group on Facebook, Slack or Workform.
  • Offering members the opportunity to host workshops on niche topics

Here’s what business.com has to say about communities and coworking:

“A 2021 survey by the American Psychiatric Association found that nearly two-thirds of remote workers said they feel lonely or isolated some or all of the time as a result of working from home. Particularly for newly remote workers, a flexible coworking arrangement may provide a necessary bridge from the old world to the new.”

Coworking is a Space For Learning

Many coworking spaces offer members only access to resource libraries, workshops, and seminars. These resources are an added perk or benefit to your membership!

If you’re not sure what learning resources a coworking space offers, reach out to their community manager. Aside from these traditional learning settings, one of the best ways to take advantage of learning opportunities at a coworker space is by connecting with the other members. Your time at a shared workspace offers opportunities to pick up new skills or advice from community members.
